Mission: Secret is a classic spy tune written using a 12-bar blues form. It mostly comprises of a catchy bass line riff with a simple, sustained melody over top.  The opening four measures, which are bold and energetic, are to be played strikingly, but not overblown.  The piece then moves into the main riff, setting up the driving feel of the piece.  Also, be sure that students control their tone on the shots from measures 57 through 71 by over articulating or over blowing.  Super Spy!  Also available for Brass Quartet.

Inspired by two folk songs from my Dutch heritage, Two Holland Tales is a piece that successfully combines lyrical and upbeat sections.  Daar ware twee koningskinderen (There Were Three Dutch Princes) is the opening lyrical movement which displays the talents of the wind and brass sections.  The piece then moves into Toen ik op Nederlands beren stand (I Once Stood Upon the Netherland's Hills) is a fast movement in 6/8 and features the percussion section.

Using the style and harmonic texture of Canadian folk songs from the east coast and the story telling features of Newfoundland, A Fisherman’s Tale is a piece about a trip out into the ocean.  The piece opens with the solemn, chorale-like movement “Farewell”, as the fisherman leaves his home and family to begin the excursion, and closes with “Return to Harbour”, an up tempo movement representing the worker’s successful homecoming. This song combines a lyrical section with an uptempo piece that uses extensive percussion.

This piece is based on a Canadian folk song which is an account of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, where the British, led by General Wolfe, captured Quebec City from the French, under General Montcalm.  This lyrical song makes use of rich, harmonies influenced by jazz music and pop music.  Performers are sure to enjoy this tune.

This is an original funk tune primarily made up of catchy riffs and licks. Although it is composed in cut time to create a laid back, funk feel, the eighth notes are to be swung. As most of the tune makes use of call and response, all parts should be balanced throughout. Also, solos have been written in, however, chord changes are provided for soloist to have an opportunity to improvise.

This programmatic percussion piece is a musical depiction of an encounter between a woodpecker (woodblock) and a lumberjack (guiro).  The piece opens by setting the peaceful ambiance of rain falling in a forest before introducing some simple call/response figures between the woodblock and guiro.  As the piece moves on, these rhythms become more complex and involved with each other.

Inspired by the Japanese style of drumming, Jo-Ha-Kyn is a piece your percussionists will enjoy playing.  It is based on the ternary structure where Jo is a slow introduction, Ha is a build up of tempi, and Kyn is the great, climactic rush before slowing down at the end.  Although traditional Japanese instruments are to be used, common percussion instruments can be used as substitutes.
